VOIP Wednesday, April 02, 2003

People who know me have undoubtedly become bored with my enthusiasm over the potential of VOIP.  I have been suggesting that this is a technology that will change the way we think of voice communication.

Apparently in major Japanese cities on nearly every street corner there there is a woman in a fluffy white coat giving out Yahoo! BB Phone boxes. It appears the deal is for $35/mo. you get 12Mbps ADSL and VOIP service. The DSL modem doubles as a VOIP box so you can use your normal phone to make phone calls over the Internet. I think it’s pretty cool to see such a major campaign with VOIP service.

Where’s Mike? Tuesday, April 01, 2003

Hmm 71.5 cents here today in Kingston…
I suppose Mike Curry is all over the media telling you all how great it is to have regulated prices…

“CHARLOTTETOWN – The price of gas is down, the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission announced late Monday that prices will fall around 1.4 cents per litre on Tuesday.  The average pump price of regular unleaded gasoline at self-serve outlets will be 82.6 cpl.”

Debate Monday, March 31, 2003

Ever notice blog discussions will often end up with the other party trying to sway you to their point of view?  Ultimately they will get pissed when you don’t try to sway them to your point of view.  Sheech, I wonder when they might get the picture that I don’t give a rat’s arse if they agree with me or not and really have no interest in trying to convince them to agree with me.

Robert is gone Monday, March 31, 2003

Friday, my colleague and friend of 29 years retired and I shall miss him.  Thursday, 150 of his closest friends gave him a fine send-off.  I drank, I spoke, they wept - it appears I should drink and speak more often.  Enjoy Hawaii Rob, you will sure be missed.

Robert Paterson\’s Radio Weblog Sunday, March 30, 2003

Most often, when Robert opens his mouth or takes fingers to keyboard, my teeth commence to hurt.  Today is an exception.  A thought provoking comment regarding size of community - http://radio.weblogs.com/0107127/

(snip).."In the Ecosystem of Networks, 150 is the defining limit of Social Capacity at the Social Network layer.  Steve Mallett comments on the Rule of 150 and Communities, saying that recognizing this natural limit can enhance community design (this post is worth reading in full). (snip)...”

*** CURRENT ISSUES

We’ve had to restore ns14, it’s currently in progress.

This should not be impacting DNS resolution, unless
your zone is configured incorrectly.

*** ISSUES FROM Mar 27 (Roughtly 3:30 AM - 1:00pm) EST

The following servers were the victims of a spoofed, distributed
denial of service attack.

ns14.zoneedit.com
ns7.zoneedit.com

ns7 is back online.  ns14 is still having problems.

They were down for about 5 hours.

Customers who have domains on these servers:  You can add a backup (third) nameserver to your domains and we won’t charge for it.

People who require better performance and reliability can add 4th and 5th networks as well, for an additional fee.

Also, we’d highly recommend increasing the TTL of your domains, unless you need it to be lower.  A good TTL is 86400 - 24 hours.

You can do this by clicking on the “SOA” screen.

*** WHY THIS OCCURED

This problem did not occur because there’s “something wrong” with the quality of our network.

In our opinon, this problem is occurring because CISCO and other router vendors provide equipment that routes spoofed packets by default.

This equipment should not route malicious traffic by default.  We know that it would require a significant increase in the CPU speed, and therefore the cost, for this filtering to be enabled.  We don’t think that this cost compares to the cost of an unstable Internet for everyone.

To anyone who has any information as to why these servers are being targeted, or who the persons attacking them are: it would be great if you told us.  Send anonymous tips to , or phone them in.
