(snip...) the introduction of public schools etc all contributed to a huge reduction of infectious disease well before the introduction of anti biotics(...snip)

FBI Interrogation for Reading Alternative Media (News) Marc Schultz Saturday, August 02, 2003

Oh dear..

http://www.utne.com/webwatch/2003_89/news/10721-1.html

FBI agents thoroughly questioned Marc Schultz after someone spotted the “suspicious” bearded man reading an article from a free, independent alt weekly paper. Schultz was at first surprised when his mother called him at work to say the FBI was at his house. Still, he thought, “background check...interviewing acquaintances… No big deal right?” Enter two FBI agents who, assuring him he is not in trouble, want to talk for a bit. A few moments later he can’t help feeling somewhat eerie as he realizes the questions are about him......

Mr. Wizard Saturday, August 02, 2003

Awe comawn..some must remember Mr. Wizard - he was on right after Howdy Doodey and just before Hopalong Cassidy....or was that Sky King and his niece Penny?  Damnit, I had to add “Doodey” to my spell checker.  Cripes, you would think that any modern spell checker would have “doodey” (case insensitive) in it!

Bonus points - how may feature Hoppy movies were made?

Farming in ernest (there is ernest again) Saturday, August 02, 2003

Consider:

Do the critters that humanity raises for food know that they are being raised for food?

Now consider:

What if humanity is being raised for food by a virus civilization.

Architectural wonders Saturday, August 02, 2003

Today I was using a leaf blower to clean my shop area (you don’t use a broom do you?) and happened to blast a spider web.  To my amazement, I could not blow the web off the wall.  Hmmm, says I, muttering darkly - the velocity of wind coming out of the end of this thing has to be a bazillion M/S so what is going on?

Now anyone that lives North of Miami knows that August 1st is the day that all the spiders in the North start building their webs in ernest (who is ernest anyway?).  Outside I go with my Mr. Wizard (you do remember don’t you?) magnifying glass and look closely at a web.  OK, now I blast that sucker with the leaf blower and then look again.  no damage!

Now think about the size of the ‘building material of the web”, the velocity of the wind, and compare to our buildings (material and ability to withstand high winds).

Friend Locke says grass is the dominate life form.  I am inclined to think:

  • Virus
  • Bacteria
  • Insects

  • Spam, pop-ups and usage trackers Saturday, August 02, 2003

When it comes to computer problems I have a reputation of knowing a little about computers.  The reputation is accurate, I know a little.  Friends, relatives and colleagues will often call me with questions and the two most common are:

Disclaimer - I have no financial interest in either of these products.  ::hb::

  • How do I stop all of this spam

  • How do I stop pop-ups

  • Both are good questions and both are causing endless irritation.  I never recommend a solution that I have not tried or have not used and fortunately there is a solution to both of these issues that work.

For spam, I highly recommend knowspam.  Simple, modest cost ($19.95 a year) and it just plain works.

To eliminate the dreaded pop-ups grab spybot.

After two weeks of using Knowspam my results are image .  There have been no false positive, no missed mail and absolutely no spam

Hypothetical question Friday, August 01, 2003

What obligation exists in this hypothetical situation.

Suppose there is a beach that is very popular as a swimming place.  Then suppose that as part of a commercial fishery, tons of chum is dumped into the water to attract a specific specie of fish.  No suppose that as well as attracting the desired specie, the chum also attracts a specie of fish that is known to be dangerous to swimmers.

Who, if anyone, has an obligation to make a situation like this known?
