Cheap shot? Sunday, January 31, 2010

The leader of Her Majesty’s Official Opposition, The Hon. Olive Crane criticised The Hon. Robert Ghiz for being on vacation in Cuba while his government announced it’s new rural strategy.  It sounded like a cheap personal shot.

I confess when I read the report of her comments, I nodded and agreed with her comments.  After speaking with an influential Tory I have had to rethink my reaction.

This person took offence at the comment and made the effort to call Mrs. Crane to tell her so.  This person’s reasoning was that there was enough reason to criticise the policy without a personal attack on The Leader.  The question was asked as to “how we can expect to attract young people to elected public office when the old way of personal attacks continue?”.  The Hon. Mr. Ghiz is certainly entitled to a vacation with his young family - just as is anyone else.

To Mrs. Crane’s credit, she was quite appreciative of the comment and sincerely welcomed any and all advice.  She continues to grow in the eyes of many.

In my opinion, the choice of making this announcement was ill-advised.  As Mr. Ghiz’s reputation of being disinterested in rural matters is well known, it might have been prudent to await his return to schedule the announcement.

Available? Sunday, January 31, 2010

It has been amusing watching the spin and double talk spewing forth from Bell Aliant as they tried to explain (just a few) of the mistakes they have made in rolling out medium-speed Internet access to rural PEI.  It appears one of their acknowledged mistakes was telling people that the service was not available, when in fact it was.  They indicate they have addressed the problem.  OK, figured I would check to see if I qualify for the service.  It appears not:

Oh, I have had the service since late November.  World class bunch!

Google VS Bing Sunday, January 31, 2010

There have been a few breathless predictions that Bing would have a severe impact in Google’s web search market share.  I was not one of the Bing devotees.  Bing’s market share grew to 11% in January from 8% in May 2009.  However, that increase came from AOL and Yahoo - Bing’s own partners.

In the article Admit it, Microsoft: you suck at the web, further analysis is offered.

A boy might give up a pension plan for that one!

Remember Audi? Saturday, January 30, 2010

Remember Audi?  DETROIT—Toyota Motor Corp.’s problems continued to mount Friday, as the auto maker said it was recalling 1.8 million vehicles in Europe and dealers said they were starting to feel the pinch after the company halted U.S. sales of eight of its top-selling vehicles.

To this day there are people who will have nothing to do with Audi as a result of their ‘out of control reversing’ in the 70’s.
I owned 4 Audi vehicles over the years.  Best vehicles I have had.

Google Docs Saturday, January 30, 2010

While Scribefire is an able alternative to Windows Live Writer, it is an add-on to Firefox.  As my preferred browser is Chrome I have been searching for a chrome alternative.  I was not aware that Google Docs would serve as an alternative.  It appears that it is - this is published via Docs.

To use Google docs:

Open a blank document in Google Docs and start writing your post without any title. You can preview the article as a web page by clicking on Share ===> View as web page (Preview) option at any point of time.

Then:

Step 1: Edit the CSS of Docs to have a feel of your own blog’s theme. Go to the Edit ===> Edit CSS option and paste the CSS of your blog’s theme over there. Click on OK to save the CSS.

Step 2: Set the width of the page. Go to the View ===> Fixed-Width Page view to get a page with fixed width.

Step 3: Start writing the post on the doc. You may insert the image on docs and even format that similar to Windows Live Writer. There is a wrap option available where the image will be wrapped with text.

Step 4: Complete the post and then preview it as web page by using option Share ===> View as Web page (Preview)

Step 5: If any changes required then come back to edit window and complete the changes.

Step 6: Now its time to publish the post on blog. Go to Share ===> Publish as web page. A window will open where you may select the option to blog that post. There is one more option over there to create a unique URL for the post to share with friends but if you are having your own blog then go ahead and post it over there. Now click on “Set your blog site settings” to provide the details about your blog. In case of self hosted wordpress blog, select “My Own Server / Custom” and then choose API as Movable Type. Provide the URL of xmlrpc.php, in most cases it should be root_url/xmlrpc.php. Then provide your Wordpress User Name and Password. Now click on Test button to test the settings. Once cleared, you may click on “OK” to post the article thru Google Docs.
